Boobie Bikkies® Ingredients
Although we are not revealing our recipe and baking processes for our Boobie Bikkies® (because these have taken a great deal of expensive research, development and ongoing testing), we are aware that as a breastfeeding mother you care about your own diet and what nutrients you will be passing through your milk to your baby. Also, because individuals may be affected by various foods if there is a history of allergies, we want to share what’s in Boobie Bikkies®, so you can decide if they are appropriate for you or somebody you care about. If you need more specific nutritional information, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Because we know that everything mothers eat will be passed to their baby through breast milk, Boobie Bikkies® are made from natural and organic ingredients with no preservatives, additives or ‘unhelpful’ foods such as chocolate (which may cause unsettled behaviour) that can pass through your milk.
Breastfeeding burns 500 or more calories a day!! Breastfeeding mums can get very hungry!
Tip: Make up a ‘feeding basket’ with some Boobie Bikkies® and a water bottle along with your phone, TV remote and a book so you can nourish yourself as you feed your baby. Individually wrapped Boobie Bikkies® make a great midnight snack too!
So, what’s in Boobie Bikkies®?
Our ‘traditional’ Boobie Bikkies® are made with organic oats, wholemeal flour, raw sugar, free range eggs, organic flaxseed, Brewer’s Yeast, sunflower oil and butter.
Note: although dairy protein can cause some babies to become unsettled, butter is fat rather than protein, so unless there is a family history of dairy allergies, butter is usually not a problem and, unlike margarine, does not contain any artificial additives. However, if you have concerns that your baby may be sensitive, check out our Gluten and Dairy free Boobie Bikkies® lactation cookies.
Organic Oats - contain saponins, which are sweet, soap-like substances that have immune-stimulating and antibiotic effects. The body can use saponins as precursors to the production of hormones, including the pituitary hormones that stimulate lactation. Beta-glucan, a protein in oats, whole wheat and barley, has been found to stimulate prolactin secretion and so raise prolactin levels in the blood with positive effects on milk production. (Jacobson, 2007; Sepehri, Renard & Houdebine 1990).
Organic Flaxseed – called the ‘new wonder food’ by WebMD, Flax seed is rich in vitamins and minerals and essential fatty acids, particularly Omega 3. These essential fats are heart healthy and will nourish your nervous system – low levels have been associated with depression. Flaxseed is also rich in lignans (which include plant estrogen), and fibre.
Brewer’s Yeast - rich in B group vitamins, minerals, folic acid and protein, Brewers' Yeast is also a rich source of chromium – an essential part of glucose tolerance factor (GTF). Chromium is needed for the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism and insulin function. Niacin (vitamin B3) is also an integral part of GTF and is present in Brewers' Yeast.
Eggs - a nutrient rich, natural, whole food, eggs are a source of high-quality protein. The World Health Organization (WHO) uses eggs as their reference standard for evaluating the protein quality in all other foods. Egg protein is usually referred to as "HBV"(High Biological Value) protein, scoring 100% on the HBV chart. All B vitamins are found in eggs, including vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, choline, biotin, and folic acid as well as essential fatty acids, especially omega 3 fats (important for healthy nervous systems in you and your baby), Vitamins A, D, E, and K, calcium, iron, zinc. They are also an excellent source of certain minerals that can sometimes be difficult to obtain from other foods such as selenium and iodine.
Gluten and Dairy Free Boobie Bikkies®
Due to popular demand and wonderful feedback from breastfeeding mums about our ‘traditional’ Boobie Bikkies®, we have carefully researched and sourced the finest and safest natural and organic ingredients to bring you Gluten and Dairy Free Boobie Bikkies®. These are a nourishing snack for breastfeeding mothers if they and/or their babies have allergies or sensitivities to dairy products or gluten.
Wow your Gluten and Dairy Free Boobie Bikkies are amazing! I have been eating one a day for a week and I have noticed my milk supply has increased dramatically. I now feel full in the afternoons and can enjoy my baby rather than stressing about my milk supply. I am on a gluten and dairy free diet, after some trial and elimination of foods - I discovered that eating gluten and dairy was causing my daughter to vomit after each feed. The bikkies taste great compared to some other bland gluten free products I have tried
Organic Coconut butter/coconut - Lactogenic and a source of instant energy without insulin spikes, coconut/ coconut oil contains healthy, healing, medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) and, like human breast milk, is rich in lauric acid, a powerful anti-microbial fatty acid that protects the immune system of the foetus and newborn. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown that lactating mothers who eat coconut oil and other coconut products, have significantly increased levels of lauric acid and capric acid in their breast milk. (Francois CA, Connor SL, Wander RC, Connor WE. Acute effects of dietary fatty acids on the fatty acids of human milk. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1998;67:301-308).
Organic quinoa - This grain-like seed (it’s not a grain), once revered by the Incas as ‘Chisaya mama’ (the mother of all grains) is now being touted as a super food by celebrity trainers. Quinoa, a complete protein, containing all eight essential amino acids is rich in vitamin E, selenium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron, folate and riboflavin. It also has prebiotic properties to feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut and, being easily digested, your body can readily access the vitamins and minerals in quinoa. Like oats, but gluten free, quinoa also contains saponins which the body can use as precursors to the production of hormones, including the pituitary hormones that stimulate lactation.
Free range eggs - a nutrient rich, natural, whole food, eggs are a source of high-quality protein.
Organic Flaxseed called the ‘new wonder food’ by WebMD, Flaxseed is rich in vitamins and minerals and essential fatty acids, particularly Omega 3. These essential fats are heart healthy and will nourish your nervous system – low levels have been associated with depression. They will also have positive effects on your baby’s nervous system and may have beneficial effects on infant sleep patterns. Flaxseed is also rich in lignans (which include plant estrogen), and fibre.
Dates - A rich source of dietary fibre, dates are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals including iron, potassium, calcium, manganese, copper, magnesium; B-complex vitamins- pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), niacin, pantothenic acid, and riboflavin - as well as vitamin K.
Sunflower seeds - One of nature’s most nutritious foods, packed full of healthy unsaturated oils, protein and fibre, sunflower seeds are an excellent source of B vitamins, particularly niacin and folate, and contain magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and zinc with smaller amounts of iron and calcium.
Pumpkin seeds - With a wide variety of nutrients ranging from magnesium and manganese to copper, protein and zinc, pumpkin seeds are nutritional powerhouses. They also contain plant compounds known as phytosterols (known to reduce bad cholesterol) and free-radical scavenging antioxidants, which can give your health an added boost. Pumpkin seeds, are an excellent source of plant-based omega-3s, as well as a rich source of tryptophan, an amino acid (protein building block) that your body converts into serotonin, which in turn is converted into melatonin, the ‘sleep hormone.’ Breast-milk is a rich source of tryptophan which supports the development of serotonin receptors in your baby’s gut, so it’s an important nutrient for breastfeeding mothers.
Sesame Seeds - Tiny, crunchy, nutty sesame seeds are loaded with essential minerals such as manganese, copper, iron, phosphorus, calcium and zinc (which promotes bone health and prevents osteoporosis later in life). Among all the nuts and seeds commonly eaten across the world, sesame seeds have been found to contain the highest amount of phytosterols. They also contain Vitamin E and are reputed to be the most lactogenic of any other seeds.
Through eating a varied natural diet while breastfeeding, you can feel confident that you are giving your baby the best nutrition possible while protecting your baby’s immune system with no chemical additives or pesticides passing through your milk supply.
